I lived through the great war as a child, but already with an intense and conscious participation. There was the enemy, always the same, Austria, and there was the courage and patriotism that gave eased the pain. In my memory, patriotism was important. Middle-class family of media culture, I felt I saw the son of the Risorgimento as a struggle of the Italian nation to become like other nations and to live peacefully with them. The nation was gaining freedom for its citizens and those of other nations.
